Campbell River's only Parkinsons-Specific Exercise Class!
Moving with Parkinson's is an 8-week activity and education program designed to help reduce the effects of Parkinson's disease.
Moving with Parkinson's
Current research shows that exercise along with proper medication can slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease and help maintain one’s muscle strength, control and function. Exercise reduces symptoms and prolongs independence. To have the greatest effect, the exercise must be at an appropriate intensity, and incorporate large, multi-joint movements.
Join this 8 week, high energy, innovative class for a fun way to keep moving with Parkinsons! Meet others in a small group setting (maximum 8 people).
Instructed and developed by our Kinesiologist with special training in Parkinson's exercise.
An individual Kinesiology assessment at Active Living Physiotherapy clinic is required before registering for the class.
All classes will be held at the Campbell River Judo Club, 450 Merecroft Road.
Canadian 2019 Parkinson's Clinical Practice Guidelines Recommendations:
- Early institution of exercise at the time of diagnosis, in addition to the clear benefit now shown in those with well-established disease.
- Exercise improves not only how people with Parkinson disease feel, but also their ability to perform activities of daily living
- Exercise should focus on gait re-education, improvement of balance and flexibility, enhancement of aerobic capacity and strength, improvement of movement initiation, augmentation of functional independence
- Continued exercise therapy is required to sustain benefits, and this is particularly important in Parkinson disease as apathy is a barrier to adherence in the absence of scheduled lessons or training
