Active Living with Arthritis (formerly GLA:D)
An exercise plus education program for those with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis
Active Living with Arthritis is a 7-week education and exercise program for those with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis to help people manage their pain and improve function.
Developed by our own expert Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists, this program provides education about: arthritis, the best management strategies (hint-the right exercise!), when X-rays play a part, and pain management. Then, twice a week, participants complete a series of specific neuromuscular exercises and measure improvement!
Research shows that EXERCISE should be the FIRST LINE OF TREATMENT for arthritis! In fact, therapeutic exercise does NOT HARM articular cartilage and can actually IMPROVE cartilage health. And exercise PLUS education about arthritis is the gold standard!
Research shows that exercise, education and weight reduction should form the foundation of osteoarthritis management (way ahead of surgery and medications). AND supervised exercise is best!
Our participants report:
-
less pain,
-
reduced use of painkillers,
-
fewer days on sick leave,
-
and being able to be more physically active.
